One of my favorite things...

A tidy and informational math journal! Today as I was walking around I noticed two impeccable math journals and had to snap a couple photos. Here they are!

Need some motivation?

I shared this with my kiddos mainly because it was a kid giving the speech with some wonderful ideas. They loved his sense of humor, but also his positive points.  It was great to see the parts they took from it! One student in particular asked me to post. Here you go!

Mr. Duey- The amazing math rapper!

Have you checked out Mr. Duey yet? He has a great way to remember how to turn fractions into decimals, improper fractions into mixed numbers, and decimals to percents. Including music is a great way to remember math. He is a pretty awesome rapper as well!

Want to rap along? Here are the lyrics:

Fraction Rap

Chorus
I’ll teach how to get rid of an improper fraction
Teach you how to get a percentage from a fraction
I’ll teach you everything you need to know about fractions
Fractions, what’s that? Lights, camera, action
I’ll teach you everything you need to know about fractions
Fractions, everything you need to know I’ll rap
I’ll teach you how to get rid of an improper fraction
Fractions, what’s that? Lights, camera, action
Verse 1
Fractions, if it’s improper you have to change it into a mixed
number, I’ll be the one to explain it. Improper is when the top
number is bigger than the bottom so when you take the bottom fit
it into the top one. So say that the bottom is 3 and the top can be
17. How many times does 3 fit in between? Well let’s see, that’s
5 take the 5 write it down big on the line. With the 2 left over from
the 17 you must now put that 2 on top of the 3 and, wow, the
mixed number is found. It’s that easy, listen to the song and you
believe me, put your own numbers in the place of what I’m
teaching.
Verse 2
Fractions, I bet you wonder how to get a percentage, divide the
top by the bottom number. For example, 5 over 10. 10 can’t go
into 5 so add a zero to the 5 and begin. Because 10 can go into
to 50 just fine, but you need a decimal point before the number of
times. So I, I guess we’re left with ‘.5’. Now take the point by the
5, move it 2 to the right and what you have is 50 so it’s 50
percent. When Mr. Duey takes you through it then it all makes
sense. It’s that easy, listen to the song and you believe me, put
your own numbers in the place of what I’m teaching.
Fractions
Take the top number divide it by the bottom number.
What’s that? Take the top number divide it by the bottom number

Conversion Rap

In math we have been working really hard converting different units within the same system. For example, gallons to pints, liters to milliliters, inches to feet, etc. Part of the way we remember the process of converting is with our "Conversion Rap!" Here are the lyrics and sound clip to practice at home.

For the audio clip: <embed src="https://www.box.com/embed/t7s7o0x0kj0pr4z.swf" width="466" height="400" wmode="opaque" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always">

What are some ways you remember how to convert units?

Where has the month gone??

I can't believe March is already over! We have two big tests down and one more to go! The science STAAR is right around the corner. Today we spent the majority of science reviewing the water cycle. By fifth grade, you know what the water cycle is, but some of the terminology (words) can be confusing! Do you remember this one?

Yes! Transpiration or "plant sweat"

Here is the link to the Water Cycle Music Video we watched in class. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to actually upload the video, but you can follow the link. This guy is funny! I am glad you got such a kick out of him. :)
